Ductwork Integrity Inspections

Fiberglass, known as “glass wool,” is simply glass made into very fine, small diameter “threads.” These threads of glass are very flexible; however, they can be broken and are light enough to become airborne particles. Duct work can be lined or insulated with fiberglass or fiberglass air filters can be used within the duct system. Fiberglass is often an overlooked source of indoor air pollution. According to the American Lung Association:

"Direct contact with fiberglass materials or exposure to airborne fiberglass dust may irritate the skin, eyes, nose and throat. Fiberglass can cause itching due to mechanical irritation from the fibers ... Breathing fibers may irritate the airways resulting in coughing and a scratchy throat. Some people are sensitive to the fibers, while others are not."

Resins or oils are often added to fiberglass filters to enhance the dust-grabbing ability. This can also adversely affect people with environmental sensitivity. These filters outgas minor amounts of fumes into the fresh air stream, which can be a problem even with the most expensive of air filters.
