Preparing Your Home for the Winter Season With DUCTZ!

Getting your home ready for winter is a daunting task most of us put off for too long, then it is suddenly cold or snowing. We hope this simple home winterization checklist brought to you by DUCTZ Air Duct Cleaning and HVAC Restoration can help! 

Check Your HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Cooling) System

• Check to make sure that everything is running efficiently 
• Have your system cleaned and checked by your trusted HVAC Contractor
• Be sure the venting for your heating system and the water heater is vented properly
• Order your filters for the season
• Check your air ducts to see if they need cleaning (remove a return register, they are usually the dirtiest)
• Cover your outdoor condensing unit to prevent debris and unnecessary water or snow from sitting on the unit fan. (Leave space of at least 8” from the ground. This allows the unit to breathe and reduces rust and corrosion.)

Be Certain Your Chimney is Clean

• Call in a professional to check the chimney and remove any build-up in the chimney 
• Be sure the flue is operating properly

Have You had Your Dryer Vents Cleaned This Year? 

• It is smart for homeowners and property managers to have dryer vents cleaned before the cold season starts – clean dryer vents prevent condensation, as well as possible vent or wall damage
• If you plan until spring to have your dryer vents cleaned, check the outdoor vent termination to be sure it is operational and not accumulated with dryer lint

Check Roof, Gutters, and Downspouts

• Gutters should be clear of debris to prevent ice dams 
• Clean gutters may also prevent damage to the roof, foundation, and interior walls
• Downspouts should efficiently direct water at least 4-5’ away from the house

Winterize all Outdoor Sources and Water Features

• Winterizing includes your irrigation and pool, as well as outdoor faucets
• Remove hoses, drain and store them until next year

Paint, Caulk, or Seal Exterior Wood Doors and Windows

• Checking the doors, windows, and seals on a windy day will give you the best clues as to which of them could use a tighter seal
